Jubilant members of the Moorpark College team celebrate their team victory in the Southern California Community College Championship today at The Country Club at Soboba Springs.

John San Juan won the individual title at the Southern California Community College Championship.

With the best five of six scores each round counting for the team total, Moorpark totaled 735 to finish six shots in front of a trio of schools: Cypress College, College of the Canyons in Valencia, and Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.

However, Moorpark won with only five players because Jason Franklin had to withdraw due to illness. Thus, every Moorpark score counted for each round. "That's an amazing feat," said one opposing coach. "My hat's off to them."

Moorpark shot 365 in the morning, led by Rudy Estrada's 2-under-par 70, backed up by 73s from Sean Elverum, Aaron Smith and Alex Ruggieri, and a 75 from Ben Barrow. In the afternoon, Smith posted a 2-under-par 70 and Elverum chipped in with a 71 and although Moorpark slipped to a 371 total it was good enough for the victory.

All four teams qualified for the California State Community College Championship next Monday (May 12) at The SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta. The best six scorers not on those four teams also qualified.

San John, a freshman from Garden Grove, shot rounds of 69-71 - 140 and finished a shot ahead of Garrett True of Santa Ana, who shot 69-72, and Zach Taylor of Saddleback, who posted rounds of 74-67. First-round leader Davis Kirkland of COC, who had five birdies and no bogeys en route to a 5-under-par 67, slipped to a 75 in the afternoon and finished in a tie for fourth at 142.
