Brookside GC tops Mission Viejo CC for Saturday Team Play Championship title

MURRIETA, April 19 -- Third time was the charm for Brookside Golf Club of Pasadena as its Cardinal team rolled to a 30-18 win over Mission Viejo Country Club in the final match of the 2008 SCGA Saturday Team Play Championship at The SCGA Golf Course.

Brookside had been runner-up in the 2004 and 2005 final matches but won its first title today since 1988. Mission Viejo had been seeking its first Team Play title. As a club with two courses, Brookside had two teams in Saturday Team Play, Cardinal and Gold.

Brookside was paced by its Nos. 2 and 4 teams -- Ron Jones and Tom Kennedy and Tony LoCasio and Sharif Sharifi, respectively -- each of whom won six points by sweeping their individual and four-ball matches. LoCasio and Sharifi each won their matches on the 18th hole,

Two other Brookside groups went 4-2 in their matches. Mission Viejo had two groups win 4-2 and two other groups finished in a 3-3 tie (one point went to each individual match winner and eacdh four-ball match was worth one point.

In addition to the four players listed above, the Brookside team included Jeff Payne, Mike Hannibal, Chiwon Kang, Richard Mar, Edward Sayer, Elven Jensen, Joe Plescia, Eric Bates, Gregory Palmer, James Sweatmon, Rick Reulbach and Maurice Norrington.

redhillRed Hill CC defeats Santa Ana CC to win Thursday Team Play Championship

MURRIETA, April 17 -- Red Hill CC of Rancho Cucamonga defeated Santa Ana CC 25-23 to claim the title of SCGA Thursday Team Play Champions at the SCGA Golf Course in Murrietta.

The teams were tied 23-23 with only the final four-ball match remaining on the course. With both team's entire rosters watching around the 18th green, Chris Leggio knocked his approach shot onto the green. Leggio 2-putted santa anato preserve the win for Red Hill.

Red Hill CC's team of Sean Brunske, Jonas Ulrich, Paul Olivera, Vince Elefante, Paul Schlick, Jeff Burum, Bill, Smith, Harlan Hill, Jim Poppen, Dave Couch, Dan Zimmer, Russel Fittante, Robert Clark, Dan Richards, Chris Leggio, and Roberto Cavazos were the competing players on the final 16-man roster.

Red Hill CC outlasted 131 teams who competed in this year's Thursday Team Play competition. Red Hill won the Thursday Team Play Championship in 2005. Santa Ana CC collected its first championship in 1934, followed by 1945 and in 1986 as a Saturday team.

Desert Team PhotosMission Hills #1 tops PGA WEST to win 2008 Desert Team Championship

PALM DESERT, April 10 -- Mission Hills Country Club #1 defeated 22 teams to claim the title of SCGA Desert Team Play Champions at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert.

Mission Hills' eight-man team of Fred Stroock, Carrington Clark, Richard Gorosh, Mike Noland, Pual Panico, Duke Kulas, David Raab and Dennis Sibson scored 487 points in the net Stableford format to place them three points ahead of 2007 champions PGA West, composed of Matt Nelson, Bruce Hoesman, Donald Shoffstall, JT Reuter, Steve Wood, Ray Kulek, John Pollis and Michael Herman, who finished with a two day total of 484. Taking third place with 473 points was the Santa Rosa Country Club squad of Charles Creecy, Phil Fields, Ken Sakai, Michael Soran, Terry Walker, Gary Wyland, Don Shegich and Randy Dee.

Twenty-three teams participated in this year’s championship which is decided by taking the best 7 of 8 net Stableford scores from each team.

PGA WEST seeks to defend title and collect 10th Desert Team Championship crown

MARCH 31 -- The 30th SCGA Desert Team Championship will be played April 8-9 at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert.

The two-day net Stableford competition will award points for each bogey, par, birdie, eagle or double eagle scored by each player; teams are composed of eight players. The best 7 of 8 scores will count toward the team total.

PGA WEST looks to defend its 2007 title by shooting for its impressive 10th championship crown. The team won by a margin of one point in last year's event over Ironwood CC #1; it previously won in 1987, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2005, and 2007.

Defending champs ousted; four teams vie for titles
Red Hill, Santa Ana; Brookside, Mission Viejo to compete in championships

MARCH 31 -- With the defending champions out and major upsets in the semifinals of both Thursday and Saturday team play, two new winners will be crowned during the finals of the SCGA Team Play Championships on April 17 at 19 at The SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta.

Santa Ana CC will bid for its fourth team play title when it takes on Red Hill CC in Thursday action. Both teams have led a storied history within the championship; Santa Ana collected its first in 1934 (its others were in 1945 and in 1986 as a Saturday team), while Red Hill is looking for its second Thursday title (which it won in 2005).

Santa Ana defeated 2007 champion Mission Hills after taking El Camino CC, Dove Canyon CC and Big Canyon in the three weeks prior. Mission Hills also won the title in 2004.

In Saturday action, Brookside Cardinal will look for its second title since 1988 against Mission Viejo CC, a team searching for its first championship title.

Brookside, of Pasadena, topped Sundale CC (Bakersfield), Costa Mesa CC, Upland Hills CC and Montebello in its trek. Mission Viejo eliminated 2006 Team Play champion Canyon Lake CC, Sycuan Resort and Morgan Run GR (Rancho Santa Fe) after its first-round bye.

Defending champion Red Hill CC (Saturday) fell to Canyon Lake in its second week of play.

Play will commence over the 7,036-yard SCGA GC, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Live scoring, as well as stories and team photos, will be available here on both championship days.
