APRIL 29 -- Four new winners were crowned today, as Carlos Hernandez, David Keays, Ted Collins and Mike August won their respective flights in the SCGA Amateur Net Championship at Industry Hills GC.
Carlos Hernandez, from Downey, won the Bobby Jones Flight when the 4.3-index shot a net 69-70--139 in the 36-hole event. This is the first tournament win for the 17-year golf veteran who works for Farmers Insurance.
"I played decent, maybe good, but I felt the pressure," he said. "On hole 11, I had a good drive and tried to place the second shot in good position but ended up behind a tree. But I put it on the green for par."

In the Jack Nicklaus Flight, David Keays of Foothill Ranch shot a net 66-74--140 with his 8.9 index for his title. A golfer since high school, the 66-year-old cancer survivor retires from his job on April 30.
"I placed second last year here, so it helps to play the same course two years in a row to better understand where to score," he says. "Today was more difficult due to pin locations but the course was in great condition."

Coto de Caza's Ted Collins, a 10.2-index, shot a 68-66-134 to win the Arnold Palmer Flight. The retired Custom Machinery worker came in second at the 2002 event at East Lake GC in Beaumont.
"I played steady and I putted well," he said of his round. "I started slow today, but I finished strong. This was the best win ever, I made three 3s in a row on the back which helped a lot."

Mike August, a 16.9-index from Chula Vista, shot a 72-61--133 in his round to win the Ben Hogan Flight.
"It was phenomenal on the front nine," the aerospace engineer said of his net 27 in his first nine holes to start the second round. "I hung on and scrambled for the balance of the round. The greens were extremely difficult and I struggled with four four-putts in the end."
