CIF/SCGA Southern California Regional Championship

The CIF-SCGA Southern Regional event is sponsored by the SCGA Foundation. The California Interscholastic Federation is divided into four districts, and each provides contestants in the events based on district student population. TheSouthern Regional is a one-day event, with teams and individual students competing in 18 holes of stroke play. At the conclusion of the round, the top six individuals and top three teams advance to the state championship, which is conducted in Southern California every other year.

It's safe to say Torrey Pines High School is officially building a dynasty, winning its third straight SCGA/CIF Southern Regional Championship with a team score of 7-over par 367, besting Santa Margarita High School by three strokes at Brookside GC Thursday. The two schools, in addition to third-place team Clovis West, will advance to the State Championship at San Gabriel CC June 6. For Torrey Pines, it was its fifth regional victory in the last ten years.

The low score of the day, however, came from Bryson DeChambeau (pictured) of Clovis East High School, firing a 6-under par 66 to take home the individual title and advance on as an individual to San Gabriel. The top nine individual not on a qualifying team move on to the state championship. For the full list of qualifying individuals, click here. The final three spots were won in a seven-person playoff, which lasted four holes.

Advancing with his Santa Margarita team is rising star Beau Hossler, who last year was the youngest competitor in the U.S. Open at Congressional. Hossler will be heading up North Monday to compete in U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying, before returning South for the CGA/CIF State Championship Wednesday. Hossler came in fifth place at Brookside, shooting a 2-under par 70, but feels there is room for improvement.

"I never really took advantage of the holes, this course is very giveable, but I kept the bogeys off the card so I can't really complain," said Hossler.

Missing the cut Thursday was defending champion Ben Doyle, who last year earned the individual title at Brookside with a score of 68. This year, he carded a 75, three strokes on the wrong side of the cut line.

DeChambeau adds his name to a trophy that has also been won by Southland standouts such as Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson. Like Hossler, DeChambeau will also be competing in U.S. Open qualifying Monday. He has also committed to playing college golf at Southern Methodist University.
