As part of the SCGA's annual membership renewal season, we are checking in with SCGA members and featuring their golf stories on SCGA.org! Have questions about renewing your membership for 2013? Visit scga.org/renew.
The November Member Outings event, which took dozens of SCGA members to Friendly Hills CC in Whittier, was especially special for SCGA member Pat O'Neal. See, as a kid, Pat's family actually belonged to Friendly Hills, but he hadn't been back to play the course in nearly forty years.
"I had played there dozens of times when my family belonged to Friendly Hills, but I hadn't been back since I was a teenager," said Pat, pictured with his fiancee Carla. "Needless to say, I was really looking forward to this opportunity."
Member Outings give SCGA members the opportunity to play a number of private and high-end public facilities at an affordable rate. Many times, members would not have access to these courses on a regular basis.
"We lucked out and the weather was perfect that day," said Pat, a member of the SCGA through FedEx Employees GC. "I really tried to absorb the surroundings while I was out there and was reminded how beautiful that place is. I'll tell you, I could build a little house right between the 11th green and 12th tee and just play those two holes over and over for the rest of my life."
Despite not playing as well as he would have liked (he shot a 90, although he was hoping for a little better), the day surely was a special one for Pat.
"The Member Outings events are run so beautifully," said Pat. "We went to one at Journey at Pechanga earlier this year, really enjoyed it, and decided to come back again!"
