The 12th SCGA Super Senior Championship concluded Tuesday with the crowning of two new Champions. Karl Stewart of Redlands earned his 1st SCGA victory to become the Gross Champion and Allan McCormick from Rancho Las Palmas CC earned the spot as this year’s Net Flight Champion.
Dove Canyon CC proved to be a mighty tough test as this year’s venue as there was not one competitor who was able to break par on the course. The low round of the tournament was Karl Stewart’s score of 72 in Round 2 to secure the victory. Stewart (76-72-148), who is fresh off a victory at the Society of Senior West Coast Classic at Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara, came from three shots back today to capture the title. Playing in the last group, Stewart was able to fend off 1st round leader Preston Davis, who finished second (73-77-150), and last year’s Super Senior Gross Champion Kenneth Forster, who finished third (76-75-151). Rounding out the top five in the Gross Division was Jim Myers of Oceanside, who moved from being T-10 after Round 1 to finish fourth (78-75-153), and Michael Uptegraff of Irvine, who soared from being T-17 after Round 1 to finish fifth (81-73-154).
In the Net Flight, Allan McCormick of Rancho Las Palmas CC led the tournament wire-to-wire to secure what ended up being a one-shot victory. McCormick was in awe after finishing his last hole with a triple bogey, thinking he had blown the lead, but to his pleasant surprise he secured the title by finishing (72-79-151). In second place, Ronald Frederick from Temeku Hills finished the tournament just one shot back, firing a 76-76-152.
Third and fourth place was determined using the USGA Method of matching score cards. Bob Costa from Mission Lakes CC earned third (75-79-154) and Bob Gauntner from Coto de Caza earned fourth (73-81-154). Rounding out the top five was David McLaughlin from Marshall Canyon Men’s Club (76-80-156).
