FINAL SCORES
LONG BEACH – The 2011 SCGA J.C. Cunningham Championship concluded Sunday in perfect weather conditions. 91 players competed over 36 holes of individual net stroke play over the weekend at Recreation Park GC and El Dorado Park GC. Players were divided into three flights based on their handicap indexes.
In the Nicklaus Flight (9.1 index and below), Robert Modrich fired a net 69 to win by three strokes over Gary Bennett of Costa Mesa Seniors GA and Peter Pellizzon of Talega GC. Modrich started the day tied with two others but came
through in the clutch in the most competitive flight out of the three. Also in this flight, Kenneth Knott out of Rancho Park captured the gross prize. His final round 69 culminated in a two-round total of two under par 142. Knott had five birdies including birdies on the last three holes to capture the gross prize by six strokes over Jay Horton.
The Palmer flight (9.2- 14.8 index) was dominated by champion Bob Allman of Pacific Coast GC. Allman kept his momentum going after an opening round of net 66 and followed it with a net 64 for a total of 130 to win his flight by seven shots over Al Salt of Eaton Canyon Seniors GC. A card-off took place for third place at the
score of 142 with Mericio Ortega of Burbank Men’s GC coming out on top.
Dennis Hetherington of Burbank Men’s GC overcame a first round deficit of one to capture the Jones Flight (14.9 index & above). Hetherington shot a net 63 on Sunday to beat Don Slayton of River Ridge Senior Men’s GC by eight strokes. Michael Vaughn of El Dorado Park Men’s club finished third with a two round net total of 141.
