2013 Event Recap
Perfect conditions for the final round of the SCGA Senior Net Championship at Temecula Creek Inn Tuesday led to fantastic play off the clubs of more than 100 competitors, who battled it out for the 2013 title. This Championship is open to any SCGA member over the age of 50, where they compete in 36 holes of individual net stroke play.
This year’s Bobby Jones flight champion was Harry Bobbitt of Brookside Men’s Club, who shot rounds of net 70 and 69 to win with a four-stroke advantage over John Dunn of Talega Golf Club.
“I’m stunned, I can’t believe I ended up winning,” said Bobbitt. “Both rounds I played pretty conservative golf. It took some patience to play smart golf, though.”
Bobbitt continued recent success in SCGA events, but picked up his first victory. In August, the Pasadena resident finished second in the net portion of the SCGA Public Links Championship and last year finished fourth in the SCGA Super Senior Championship.
In the Jack Nicklaus flight, Marv Moneymaker of Monarch Dunes Golf Club took home the title carding net rounds of 71 and 66, tying with Jose Enriquez of Temecula Creek Men’s Club, who took second place after a card off.
“I was four shots behind going into the final round and I knew I had to hit a lot of good shots out there to contend,” said Moneymaker, who also claimed his first SCGA title. “Once I started playing I was in a great groove and finished really strongly.”
In the Arnold Palmer flight, John Sousa of Recreation Park Golf Club hoisted the trophy, shooting a net 68 and 76 to pass by Ray Bowling of Lakewood Men’s Club by two strokes.
“I love this net event, as it gives us higher Handicap golfers a chance to compete in a championship environment,” said Sousa. “I’ve come close a couple of times before and it was great to finally get that win under my belt.
During Tuesday’s final round of play, Reginald Porter of Stats Golf Club recorded a hole-in-one on the second hole of the Creek course. Porter flushed his 8-iron 135 yards.
